Why the N55 is still in the league | BMW 435i Review

Yet strangely, I don’t hate this thing. The driver and passenger have plenty of room up front and the materials in this XLE Premium were very nice.

The N55 and B58 are both inline-six engines produced by BMW, and they have been used in various models across the years. Here’s a comparison of the two engines:

  1. Performance: Both the N55 and B58 engines offer impressive performance characteristics. The N55 engine typically produces around 300 to 335 horsepower, depending on the specific model and tune. The B58 engine, on the other hand, tends to deliver higher power outputs, ranging from 320 to 382 horsepower. In terms of acceleration and overall performance, the B58 generally offers a slight advantage over the N55.

  2. Turbocharging: Both engines feature a single twin-scroll turbocharger. However, the B58 incorporates the latest technologies and advancements in turbocharging, which results in improved response and power delivery compared to the N55.

  3. Efficiency: The B58 engine provides better fuel efficiency compared to the N55. BMW’s continuous development and advancements in engine technology have resulted in more efficient combustion and reduced emissions in the B58.

  4. Cooling: The B58 engine benefits from an upgraded cooling system compared to the N55. It incorporates additional cooling features such as an additional radiator and an upgraded intercooler, which help in managing heat more effectively, especially during spirited driving or high-performance applications.

  5. Aftermarket Tuning Potential: Both the N55 and B58 engines have a significant aftermarket tuning following. However, due to advancements in technology and better potential for power gains, the B58 engine generally offers a greater tuning potential and aftermarket support.

It’s worth noting that the specific performance characteristics and power outputs of the N55 and B58 engines can vary depending on the specific model, generation, and tuning applied by BMW. Therefore, it’s essential to consider the specific application and context in which each engine is being used.

Ultimately, both the N55 and B58 engines are well-regarded and offer strong performance in their respective applications. The B58 represents a newer generation with advancements in technology and performance, providing a slight edge over the N55 in terms of power delivery, efficiency, and potential for tuning.
